It has been a long time since March 8. That was the last time we met to worship in the same place.
It was pre-covid 19, pre-social distancing, pre-quarantines, pre-world wide border closings, pre-job losses and business closures, pre-sports being cancelled and school being dismissed to finish the year online. It would have been hard to convince any of us in January what was coming our way, but here we are in a post Covid-19 world.

Never in my lifetime has a pandemic enveloped the world in this way. Never in my lifetime has the government placed so many restrictions on citizens in an effort to protect and preserve their lives from one particular illness.  Restrictions that have drastically impacted every part of our lives from if we can get haircuts to if we can physically gather with other Christians in a large group to worship our Lord.

We are in a new day. The “normal” of this new day has yet to really be determined. In every sphere of our society people are searching for ways to, on the one hand, go about the business of life and, on the other, avoid a disease that too often brings on the business of death. The “church” at large (of which Central is a part) is no different. The timeless mandates of loving God, loving one another and loving the world have not changed, but the context has dramatically shifted.

On May 31 we will endeavor to do again what last occurred here on March 8.  Our setting is the same room, but the rules by which we convene are markedly different. Let me be the first one to acknowledge that I wish we didn’t have the need for any new guidelines for how we are to gather, yet I am simultaneously thankful (in this Memorial Day weekend) we live in a country where our government is not attempting to prevent us from worshipping but rather seeking ways for us to worship safely.

With all these things in mind, I invite you to read again the guidelines we published last week which are our best effort to adjust to the moving target of what is safe in large groups. You can look at these guidelines by clicking on the coronavirus update on our webpage www.cbcdecatur.org. Thank you in advance for the grace and understanding you are demonstrating as we do our best to facilitate ways to love God, love one another, and love the world in these complex days.
